This is a great video but does anyone know the difference between a social enterprise and a not-for-profit business (if there is one)? This video states that the use of profits toward the business is what makes an enterprise a social one but I'm pretty sure thats what makes a not-for-profit business too. Thanks
LozoDozo
+James Ryan they are similar in the sense that they both provide benefits to society in one way or the other. But not-for-profit is highly regulate, has to release tons of financial information, and it will put any profits it makes into society rather than business owners. Not for profit can also claim tax exemption on income. A social enterprise on the other hand is like any other business but rather than giving huge bonus checks to the owners (which it can do if it so pleases) it uses these funds for social activities or internal improvements. So social entrepreneurship has more freedom to use profits as it pleases. It is not a classification of a business such as non profit it is more of a name if that makes sense. If your business spends its profit to provide medication to people in need and funds research and development internally, you probably are a social entrepreneur.

Great answer, that makes a lot of sense, thanks!

+James Ryan Non-for-profit is a legal designation for companies that are bound by a "non-distribution constraint," which, as LozoDozo notes, means that they can't distribute profits to the business owners. Thus, it's government tax-exempt (the theory is that since the organization is using it's $$ for some social good, the government doesn't need to tax the org and use the tax revenue to create a government program to deliver that same social good). For a social enterprise, there is no requirement that profits are necessarily reinvested in the social venture. Rather, the crux of social enterprise is using market mechanisms to create social value. So in the example below ... if you are interested in providing medicine to people in need, you could, as LozoDozo notes, use your profits to buy that medicine and deliver it. But that's not the only way to be a social entrepreneur. You could also create a company that produces a very small number of generic medicines that, because you are manufacturing in scale, you can produce at low cost, allowing you to sell them to hospitals in developing countries at prices they can afford. Both of these are social ventures. The difference is that in the first example, the company is using its profits to buy medicine that it gives away, and in the second example the company is taking advantage of production economies and market forces to create the social value of medicine distribution. The canonical example of a business like the second example is Muhammad Yunus' Grameen Bank.
